Saint Croix Island International Historic Site
Set on the mouth of the Saint Croix River, which acts as the border between the United States and Canada, Saint Croix Island is managed by the National Park Service. Located near Bar Harbor in Maine, the island offers no public access but does offer a visitor contact station on the U.S. riverbank.
In 1604, French explorers attempted to colonize the island once they learned they were stuck for the bitter winter. Their stories of life and death in the winter and of Native American friendliness once spring arrived are told through guided tours and through scenic interpretive sites.
