Visiting Augusta, Maine

Arboretums, Museums, & Outdoor Recreation

Maine State House

Maine State House

Maine’s capital city is brimming with activity. Visit Augusta for historic sites, family fun, and incredible New England outdoor adventure.

Maine is beautiful country, and what better way to explore that than a visit to the Viles Arboretum.

Also known as the Pine Tree State Arboretum, Viles is a 224-acre arboretum and botanical garden created to "to promote the knowledge and appreciation of Maine's trees and other flora for people of all ages by offering opportunities for education, recreation, and inspiration."

Free to the public, Viles is open every day from sunrise to sunset – making your outdoor adventures more convenient.

At the Viles Arboretum, visitors may take advantage of five miles of trails – perfect for hiking and cross-country skiing – plus more than 300 species of trees and shrubs. Explore the Native Plant Garden, the Chestnut Collection, or the Hosta Garden.

In May, visit the Lilac Garden, or trek through the Urban & Community Forestry Demonstration Area – the largest compilation of plant life at Viles.

For the historical side of Maine, visit the Maine State Museum – neighboring the Maine State House and Blaine House in the Maine's State House complex. Closed in Sundays and Mondays, the Maine State Museum showcases permanent and traveling exhibits and collections focusing on Maine’s history, natural science, and current discoveries.

Exhibits include “Malaga Island, Fragmented Lives” and the “Tourmaline and the Rich Legacy of Mining at Mount Mica.”

Tired of using your indoor voice? Head to the Steve Powell Wildlife Management Area – commonly known as Swan Island – just 20 miles south of Augusta. A 1,755-acre island in southern Maine, Swan Island features nature trails, bird watching, and historic sites.

Found on the National Register of Historic Places, the Steve Powell WMA is open daily – from dawn till dusk – from May through Labor Day.

Outdoor adventure and New England history – it’s all found in Augusta.
